Two Top Leaders of Mamaroneck School District Retiring
Supt. Sherry
King & Asst.
Supt. Sarah Tate to Leave This Summer
by Joan R. Simon
(January 11, 2005) Major changes are in store for the Mamaroneck school
district with the retirement of its two top officials this summer: Superintendent
Sherry
King and Assistant Superintendent for Operations Sarah Tate.
Superintendent Sherry King (r) discusses her plans
with former board presidents Ronda Lustman & Brad Stein.
Dr. King’s
departure will come after a nine year tenure that has included the creation
of a 6-7-8 middle school and the adoption of a
house system; development of a consistent curriculum within the elementary
schools and publication of curriculum guides in the elementary and
middle schools; new leadership in all six schools in the district; and
major
bonds that have financed major new construction at both the middle
school and the high school.
Sarah
Tate (at right) will be leaving Mamaroneck after 15 years as Assistant
Superintendent for Operations in charge of budget preparation, capital
construction,
building maintenance, transportation,
data processing and technology. She has overseen a number of large construction
projects during her tenure,
including the Hommocks arts wing, pool renovations, the high school science
wing and new addition, as well as substantial renovations at the four
elementary schools. She has also directed a budget process that has given
the district a AAA bond rating from Moody’s and an award for its
budget book.
OPEN FORUM TO AID SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH:
The search
for a new superintendent begins next week with two open forums in which
community input will be
sought
on
what
characteristics
the district
should be looking for in a new leader. The district’s search
consultant, Jacqueline Roy, will lead the first forum on Wednesday,
January 19 from 7:30 – 8:30 pm and a second one
on Thursday, January 20 from 9:00 to 10:00 am in the Post Road
Conference Center (PRCC) of Mamaroneck High School. There
will be additional meetings with groups from specific sectors of the
community.Dr. King plans to pursue her work in
education as Director of Special Projects for the national educational
improvement organization, America’s
Choice, Inc., a subsidiary of the not-for-profit National Center on Education
and the Economy. Ms. Tate will be retiring to join her family in Florida.
Board
president Celia Felsher formally announced the departures at the public
meeting on Tuesday, January 10, but the word had leaked out earlier
in the week, and a number of former board presidents and board members
were on hand to start the process of saying goodbye to Dr. King and
Ms. Tate. Ms. Felsher applauded the work of both women in a brief statement,
but indicated there would be more opportunities for discussing and
appreciating
the contributions of the two.
