Latimer Inauguration Staged at Emelin Jan 2
by Judy Silberstein
George
Latimer, a Democrat from Rye, will be taking his first official steps
as the New York assemblyman for the 91st district from the stage of the
Emelin
Theatre
in Mamaroneck where he will be inaugurated on Sunday, January 2 at
2 pm. The public is invited to the ceremony and reception that marks
the beginning of his career in Albany. He will be replacing
fellow Democrat Ron Tocci, who is stepping down after 20 years of representing
the district that
includes Larchmont and Mamaroneck.
Meanwhile, candidates are getting ready for the special election that
will fill the seat on the Westchester County Legislature that Mr. Latimer
is vacating after 14 years of service. Neither party would confirm its
choice, but the candidates appear to be Republican Franklin Chu, a Rye
City Councilman, and Democrat Judy Myers, a Town of Mamaroneck Councilwoman.

Seat: Myers vs. Chu Battle Is Likely)
Ideally, both the Democrats and Republicans involved would have liked
to hold off until “next year” to begin their campaigns. No
official announcements have been made, but the cats keep leaping out
of the bag, most recently via correspondence mailed out this week to
college students home on winter break.
Amanda and Scott Schwartz, the college-aged children of Councilwoman
Myers, provided the students with absentee ballot applications. Their
accompanying letter pointed out their mother’s support for teens
and young people and concluded, “Simply put, our mom rocks.”
The Schwartz children may be forgiven for jumping the official gun.
The entire election process will be compressed into a few short weeks
with the exact date to be set by the Westchester County Board of Legislatures.
The newly constituted board is meeting for the first time next Tuesday,
January 4, 2005. High on their “to do list” is to find a
date for the election, which must fall between 30 and 90 days from the
date that Mr. Latimer steps down – Sunday, January 2.
The legislators may want to wait to see if they need to hold an election
to fill the seat of County Legislator Andrea Stewart Cousins who is still
locked in a battle with incumbent Nick Spano for his NY Senate seat.
Ballots are still being contested and a court challenge is likely, so
the legislators may have a long wait before they have all the information
they need to set a date.
Given the uncertainty, the prospective candidates in county district
7 are going ahead with their unofficial, behind the scenes work to garner
support
and get their campaigns organized.
