Pre-K Receives Holiday Gifts:
1st Installment on Pledge
From New Business
by Judy Silberstein
(December 28, 2004) When Petit
Jubilee, the online source
for baby and children’s gifts, first opened its electronic
doors last summer, its owner pledged to set aside a portion
of their profits to support educational programs. Last
week, Cecilia Absher, founder and CEO of Petit Jubilee,
made a first down payment on that pledge with a holiday
book drop at the Mamaroneck Avenue School Pre-Kindergarten
program. Each child received his or her own book: Curious
George, Clifford, Dr. Seuss or another classic. In addition,
Petit Jubilee obtained a donation of “big books” from
Candlewick Press, which were provided to the eight
pre-k classrooms to enhance shared reading activities and “circle
time.”

Cecilia
Absher displays some of the books donated to the pre-K
children.
The pre-K program, which serves over 100 three and four-year
olds, some from financially disadvantaged families and
others with special educational needs, focuses on active
learning and reading readiness. Begun in 1965 as a joint
venture between the three local governments and the schools,
it has been housed at Mamaroneck Avenue School and has
recently become an official part of the Mamaroneck School
District.
“It is such a pleasure to see those young children
and imagine how they will grow and develop over the years,” said
Ms. Absher, who is also vice-president of the Mamaroneck
School Board. “We wanted to contribute to their holiday
enjoyment in a way that celebrates learning and fosters
an interest in reading. Thanks to our customers, we are
beginning to fulfill our mission of supporting children’s
education and enhancing their individual experiences.”
According to Ms. Absher, the company is too new to have
realized a profit but still wanted to start making good
on its commitment to support educational programs. She
is looking for future programs and initiatives that her
company should consider supporting. Have an idea? E-mail
