In Lieu of Birthday Gifts:
Contribution to Young Artist
Fund
(November 6, 2004) As a committed teacher/educator/lecturer
for more then 50 years, Alton Tobey expressed the desire that,
even in
his
current
state of health (and well beyond), he continue to
be a source of nurture and encouragement of young artists
to pursue their dreams and talent.
To this end, in honor and acknowledgement
of Alton S. Tobey's contribution to the art community in
Westchester, the Mamaroneck
Artist Guild (M.A.G), an
organization that Tobey helped found 50 years ago, has established an annual "Young
Artist On The Rise Scholarship Award" in Alton's name.
As M.A.G Gallery Director Wendy Porterfield
explained, “This is an exciting
annual event that began last year in honor of Alton that provides a venue for
all talented high school art students from Mamaroneck and New Rochelle to have
their work publicly exhibited. Through a jury, the ‘Best in Show’ each
year will be awarded the ‘Alton S. Tobey Scholarship Award.’ ”
