40 Awarded Tenure in Mamaroneck Schools

by Joan R. Simon

(April 22, 2004) For the second year in a row, 40 teachers, administrators and teaching assistants received tenure appointments in the Mamaroneck School District. At the April 20 School Board meeting, the high school library was overflowing with faculty members, well-wishers and innumerable bouquets of flowers as the principals from the six schools honored the tenure recipients from their buildings.

The Hommocks was easily in first place with 15 newly tenured teachers and administrators, including Principal Seth Weitzman and Assistant Principal Nora Mazzone. The high school followed with nine appointments, two of whom share their time with other schools in the district. The elementary schools together granted tenure to16 faculty members.

Rosemary Coletti, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel predicted that that the number of next year’s tenure recipients could be even greater. The growing student population and the retirement of teachers hired many decades ago have come together to create an increasing number of tenure openings. In September, the board announced that 47 teachers were eligible for tenure this year. (See: Tenure)

Bob Martin, president of the School Board commented, “It’s wonderful to see so many young, enthusiastic teachers joining the Mamaroneck family.” Superintendent Sherry King concurred: “We are all just beaming.”
