Question the Candidates: II
Mike Wiener

What public service have you
performed in the past year to help improve the Village?
I feel very privileged to have been
a board member this past year. We have made great strides to improve
our community. We have
addressed the difficult issues previous boards did not want to
touch. Whether it is through the creation of the Open Space
Committee, Village Environmental Committee, review of the zoning
code, new plans for Flint Park, or cleanup of the business district,
the policies of openness, inclusion and respect for public comment
have always been followed.
In my own Pine Brook neighborhood , I spearheaded the renovation
of Pine Brook Park and continue to work on alleviating the Pine
Brook flooding problem. As treasurer of LISWIC, I oversee the
village’s responsibility concerning stormwater management.
At
Village Hall, I have undertaken the modernization of our Village
website, and replaced the boilers and our old telephone system
saving tens of thousands of dollars
I am proud of all our accomplishments made in such a short time.
But it is just a beginning. In addition to the large projects,
which are
moving forward, there is much more work to be done.
I have worked actively to coordinate Village activities in the
critical area of emergency preparedness, sponsored a local sprinkler
ordinance requiring sprinklers for new residential construction.
Public safety is an issue with many facets: fire safety, crime
prevention, traffic safety, building and health codes and anti-terrorism
precautions. Public safety issues must be managed actively. We
must continue to plan, equip, and train for contingencies at
a local level, as well as step up our emergency preparedness
at the
regional level.
Working to improve our local environment should be our long-term
focus. This includes creating plans to reduce flooding,
preservation of open space, cleanup of our streets and waterways,
as well as the regional based issues including thruway and airplane
noise. |
