Democrats Share Valentine’s Day Cheer

(February 18, 2003) Last Friday morning, February 14, startled morning commuters in Larchmont peered through their mufflers at bright balloons and baskets of Valentine’s candy and heart-shaped muffins. Much to their amazement, the three Democratic candidates were there at the train station, setting the tone for a happy Valentine’s Day. Prospective Trustees Anne McAndrews and Geoff Young, along with the unopposed candidate for Village Justice, Jerry Bernstein, braved the bitter cold to bring cheerful camraderie to their city-bound neighbors boarding the popular early morning trains.

“We wanted to brighten everybody’s day,” McAndrews explained, “and I think we succeeded. It was great to see their faces light up when we handed them Valentine’s candy.”

Young asserted that as much as he loves Larchmont, he does not intend to make this an annual event unless the temperature is significantly balmier.

Bernstein concurred, saying that a minimum of 20° F might be an appropriate cutoff point next time.

The three candidates seeking election said they thought that the Valentine’s Day celebration was an effective way to communicate their affection for Larchmont and their very real enthusiasm for serving in elective office. “Each of us has served at least one term as Trustee or Village Justice,” McAndrews explained. “We think we did quite a good job in office, and we’re eager to do it again.”

Their buoyant spirits throughout the morning conveyed their enthusiasm pretty convincingly. The effective teamwork they displayed was also an excellent demonstration of the enormous respect they have for one another. “There’s no doubt about it,” said party chair Carol Miller. “If both Anne & Geoff are elected to the Board – and I sincerely hope they are – they will work extremely well together in the service of our Village. And, of course, since Jerry is unopposed, we can look forward to his very effective presence on the bench for another six years.”

The election takes place Tuesday, March 18.
