Of the three Democratic candidates in Larchmont Village
this year, Geoff Young’s history as a public servant
extends back the farthest. After a brief term as a Village
Prosecutor, Geoff was elected to the Larchmont Village Board
16 years ago. He served as Trustee until 1991, representing
the Village on the Library Board of Trustees, Coastal Zone
Management Commission, Traffic Commission, Village Court,
Committee on the Disabled and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
He also served as Fire Commissioner, Water Commissioner and
member of the Board of Control for LMC-TV.
At that time Geoff ran on the Republican slate, and as such,
competed with one of his current Democratic running mates,
Jerry Bernstein, for the position of Village Justice in 1995.
Soon after that unsuccessful campaign Geoff found himself
a single father of two young boys. This personal role change
provoked a re-evaluation of priorities, resulting in Geoff’s
switch in political affiliation to independent.
Following a few years of leaving his law office early to
get home for homework monitoring and dinner preparations,
Geoff is ready to turn his attention back to public service,
where his presence has been keenly missed.
Geoff notes that a return to the public arena is a natural
progression for him, given that he represents the fourth generation
of his family to achieve elective office. Having lived and
worked his entire life in the Larchmont-New Rochelle area,
Geoff’s perspective reaches a long way back. Some issues,
like parking problems, never die, he remarks; they just come
back as growth continues. But with his long-term vision, he
sees great potential in helping his beloved Larchmont achieve
a steady course of “Smart Growth,” to retain the
intimate Village feeling while accommodating new challenges
in housing and traffic.
