(December 4, 2003) There’s a new art display in the
Village of Larchmont with an unusual title and unusual source. “Art
of the Calendar,” which features works from Mamaroneck
High School’s art department is appearing in the window
of Eric Newland’s Designer One shop on Palmer Avenue.
“Eric Newland is a longtime supporter of the arts
in the Mamaroneck School District,” said school spokesperson Joan Rosen. Over
18 years ago he established the annual Eric Newland Designer
One Award, which is open to all students and includes work
in the visual arts and experimental media. Each year Newland
not only donates the prize but also participates in the judging
and presents the award. “The scholarship is a way to
encourage the kids to stay on the path they’re on,” said
Newland.
The art appearing in Newland’s store window may be
familiar to those who receive the district calendar. Each
August school families await the arrival of the Mamaroneck
School district calendar, partly to find out what’s
happening each year and partly to check out the student artwork
that illustrates most pages. Each year, the high school art
department selects approximately twenty representatives from
a wide range of media for inclusion in the calendar. This
year, though, is the first time the original works have been
seen in Larchmont Village.
“It’s great for local businesses to be cheerleaders
for the students,” said Newland. “ The exhibit
is a way to get the kid’s self-expression and creativity
out into the community.”
The “Art of the Calendar” will be on display
through mid-December.
