Changes on the Horizon
for MHS Junior Prom
by Joan R. Simon
(November
20, 2003) It was only November, but at the eleventh grade
parent network on Tuesday night, attendees learned about
new plans for the Mamaroneck High
School Junior Prom in May: there will be mandatory busing and a school-organized
after-prom party. Once the details of the after-prom party have been worked
out, parents of Juniors should be receiving a letter from the Administration
with more information. In another switch from tradition, the May 14th prom
will be held at the Marriott Westchester in Tarrytown, rather than the Renaissance
Westchester Hotel, where recent proms have taken place.
In addition to mandatory busing to the prom this year,
it is expected that students will not be permitted to leave
the prom by limousine. Students not going on to the after-party,
will have to be picked up by their parents. Last year a
group of students, parents and administrators arranged
for both optional busing and an after-prom party in New
York City with transportation provided, but these were
cancelled when an insufficient number of students signed
up for either option. (See: Junior
Prom Traditions Trump Reform)
This year’s after-prom event is being planned by
a group of parents not directly affiliated with the PTSA,
who are working with Junior class advisor, Erin Zegel.
PSTA President Nancy Pierson noted that the changes in
the prom reflect a desire to stress the “3 C’s:
an inclusive Class event, no Cliques, and keeping the Cost
down.” The price of the prom, including busing and
after-party, is expected to be $100, a dramatic savings
from the limo/after prom expenses of previous years.
“I think it’s a very, very positive step,” said
Karen Isaac, who facilitated the eleventh grade network
meeting. “We’re hoping the junior class
will get behind it."
