Human Rights Commission: MLK Awards & Andrew Young
Coming to MHS on Dec 4
from the Human Rights Commission
( November 20, 2002) Fifty years ago, on May 17, 1954, the
Supreme Court of the United States handed down its historic
ruling
in
the
case
of Brown v. the Board of Education that precipitated nationwide
desegregation in the nation’s public schools. Flash
forward fifty years and you’ll find the Mamaroneck-Larchmont
Human Rights Commission preparing to honor this historic
moment with one special and one regular event:
On Thursday, December 4, 2003, the Commission
and the Mamaroneck High School have invited renowned human
rights leader Andrew Young to lead a community conversation
on "Why Me? Human Rights Issues and Today's Youth."
See details below:
On Wednesday, January 14, 2004, the Commission will present
its seventeenth annual award ceremony in honor of the memory
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards
“
The Human Rights Commission award honors an individual or
organization in the community whose volunteer activities
and high level of commitment exemplifies the principles and
dedication of Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Chairwoman
Robin Nichinsky. The annual award was established in memory
of the late Peter Fousek who served for many years as a chairperson
of the Town of Mamaroneck Human Rights Commission. The Commission
will reveal the honorees in a program and award ceremony
at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck on January 14, 2004.
Advance “rumors” suggest that this year’s
honoree(s) will come from the world of education. However,
the Commission is still accepting nominations for the award
until December 5, and everyone is urged to participate in
the process by suggesting an individual or organization for
the 2004 award. “Broad community participation is essential
to accomplish the mission of the human rights commission,” stressed
Nichinsky.
Nominations can be typed or handwritten (legibly, please)
and must include the name, address and telephone number of
the individual or organization nominated. There should also
be a one-page statement discussing what the nominee has done
to qualify for award consideration.
