Nov 22 & 23: Food Drive Set by United Way and Local Food Pantry

by Carol Cauley from the Hunger Task Force

(November 18, 2003) This is the weekend to fill your grocery cart with food for the holidays – and to fit in a few extra items to share with needy local families.

As they have in previous years, the United Way of Larchmont and Mamaroneck will be partnering with the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force to collect non-perishable food items in their annual Have a Heart for the Hungry” food drive. The Hunger Task Force operates a food pantry out of the Community Action Program Center in Mamaroneck and will pass on the donated food to more than 240 families at the Thanksgiving distribution.

As you do your Thanksgiving shopping on Saturday, November 22, or Sunday, November 23, add a few extra items to the cart and pass them on to the volunteers who will be receiving donations in a number of parking lots at area stores. Collection sites will be: A & P on Mamaroneck Avenue, Trader Joe’s on the Boston Post Road, Stop & Shop on the Boston Post Road in Larchmont, and Food City at Halstead and West Avenues. Volunteers will be at the sites from 9 AM until 4 PM both days. Donations may also be brought during the week to the United Way office at 230 Larchmont Avenue, from 9 AM until 1 PM.

Recommended food items for donation: Cereal, dry milk, dry beans, canned ravioli or spaghetti and meatballs, chicken or beef stew, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits, soups, baked beans, rice, pasta, specialty potato packages, cake/muffin mixes. Please, no glass jars or opened packages.
