Plagued by Homework? Two Larchmont Clinical Psychologists Offering Workshop to Help

by Susan McLaren

(November 13, 2003) The homework is piled on the dining room table. It's way past bedtime, but there are hours of assignments left to complete and homeworkyou and your children are screaming at each other. Does this sound like your home?

Drs. Vicki Ehrlich and Abbe Marcus-Rand, clinical psychologists from Larchmont, are conducting a four-week interactive workshop on reducing homework battles between parents and their children. Both psychologists have noticed that clients are reporting an increase in family stress resulting from nightly homework completion.

“Households have changed. Children are busier, there are many more outside influences competing for children’s attention, including after-school activities, computers, and instant messaging. Parents, too, are busier. Parents tend to be more involved in their children’s lives than in the past,” said Dr. Ehrlich.

“Parenting styles, children’s temperaments, and learning styles all enter into the equation and make for, in many cases, frequent evening battles,” added Dr. Marcus-Rand.

The workshops will cover the following topics:

Should you help with homework? How involved should you be? How much should you help? How will this change as your child develops?

Are your expectations in line with your child’s age and abilities? Are they too high or too low?

How can you provide help in positive ways and be heard? What if your child completely refuses your help?

When and how should you talk to your child’s teacher?

Dr. Ehrlich and Dr. Marcus-Rand are clinical psychologists with extensive backgrounds working with children and their parents. Dr. Ehrlich trained at Roosevelt Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. In addition to a private practice, she has worked for the past eight years for the Soifer Center for Child Devlopment. Dr. Marcus-Rand trained at Roosevelt Hospital, as well. She worked as a school psychologist for ten years and is currently in private practice.

The seminars will be held in the Larchmont office of Drs. Ehrlich and Marcus-Rand offices on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. For more information, please call Dr. Ehrlich (914) 833-3875 or Dr. Marcus-Rand (914) 522-6055.
