New Officers for a New School Board Selection Committee

by Judy Silberstein

(November 5, 2003) The next School Board election is not until May of 2004, but the Committee for the Selection of School Board Nominees for the Mamaroneck School District (known as the Selection Committee) has already started its cycle of internal reorganizations, meetings and public announcements. There's new leadership, and the nine members elected last spring to three year terms have joined those elected in the two previous years. (See: Election Results)

The new Chairperson is Syl Michael Morrone, who had been serving as interim chair since May. Vice-chair is Ann Katzenstein and Publicity Chairperson is Emily Saltzman Hoffner.

The Selection Committee is an independent organization whose twenty-four members are elected from the four elementary school districts. The mission is to recruit and select community members to run for the Mamaroneck School Board. A few months before the May elections, the Committee will announce its selections and introduce its candidates to the public.

In recent years, the Selection Committee has endorsed one candidate for each open seat on the School Board. The Committee has also helped its endorsed candidates run in contested elections.

"As we have done successfully in the past, we are looking forward this year to reaching out to the community at large to identify highly qualified, potential School Board candidates," said new Chairman Morrone. "This year there are two seats up for election in May," he pointed out.

Most of the Selection Committee meetings are held in private, but there will be a series of open events where the community is invited to learn about the process of selecting candidates and the criteria used to assess the suitability of potential candidates.

It's not too soon to contact the Committee about serving on the School Board or the Committee itself. Any interested resident should call 834-4388 or email mers@optonline.net
