Dream Season Comes to an End:
Lady Tigers Drop 5-4 Heartbreaker in Overtime

SEE: Sports Spotlight on Top Scorer Thea Parry Childerley

by Dave McGuckin, Mamaroneck Athletic Director

(October 28, 2003) It was a game that seemed as if a winner would never emerge, but with a fortuitous skip of a pass in front of the net, a season for the ages was suddenly coming to a close. Lakeland took a crossing pass with 2:11 remaining in overtime and scored the decisive goal for a dramatic 5-4 sectional semi-final victory over the Lady Tigers at Putnam Valley HS yesterday.

The loss ends Mamaroneck's bid for the Section One field hockey title as well as putting a halt to the Lady Tigers' unbelievable 14-game unbeaten streak. Midori Uehara put the third-seeded Tigers (14-2-3) on the board first, scoring unassisted just three minutes into the first half. "When they scored first on the corner, I thought 'Oh god, these sectional games have been so tight, it could be a one-goal game and that would be it.' Luckily we were able to get going soon there after, " said Lakeland coach Sharon Sarsen. Lakeland quickly evened the score at one to alleviate Sarsen's concerns.

Lakeland scored, on a penalty stroke, and stretched their lead to 3-1, but following a Mamaroneck timeout, the Tigers began to seize the momentum. "We knew we were going to come back," said Tiger forward Jean Goldfarb. "We never thought for one second that we were out of it."

Mamaroneck's rally came suddenly and without warning, as goals by Goldfarb and Mallory Lichtenstein two minutes apart tied the game at 3-3.

With the Tigers' offense surging, the defense tightened behind the spirited goaltending of Samantha Lyons, who stonewalled a number of scoring chances on the way to a game-high 18 saves. Goldfarb's second goal of the day - with just 5:44 remaining - gave Mamaroneck its first lead since the opening face-off. Lakeland, however, would tie the score at four with 3:03 remaining in regulation. The game ended a tie in regulation and forced both teams to compete 7 v.7 for overtime.

"It was a great game by two great teams," said a visibly disappointed coach Savage. "I'm very, very proud of my kids as they refused to back down and they played with everything they had ... this has just been an awesome season. I'm just really, really proud of the girls!"
