Want a Village Tree? Have a Shrub to Give Away?
by Judy Silberstein
(October 22, 2003) Throughout the Village of Larchmont,
the street trees are putting on their fall colors and dropping
their
leaves.
Among
them
are
the
85 new trees planted this spring through the effort known
as the “Big Dig.” What’s next for the streetscape?
There will be more planting next spring, reports Parks and
Trees Chairman Jan Feinman. In the meantime, residents can
be thinking about adding or subtracting to their streetside
forest.
The Parks and Trees Committee’s annual report, discussed
on Monday, October 20 by the Village Board, recapped the
Big Dig and noted, “Great care went into choosing size
and species that would flourish in each location. Out of
the 85 trees planted, there were only 5 that have been identified
as not doing well. We are currently arranging to have these
trees replaced in the spring at the supplying nurseries expense.”
Want a tree?
If you missed out on the Big Dig 2003 and want to have a
tree planted in front of your home, the Committee is taking
requests for next year. To request a tree, just write the
Committee, care of Village Hall.
In the early spring, Committee members and their consultant
arborist will be checking out potential sites for new trees.
They assess conditions, including: Any overhead wires? How
much sun? Is there space for roots? How close are other trees
and plants?
“We take into consideration the owners’ requests,
but also the overall situation,” said Feinman. Tree
selection involves consideration of the Village goal of maintaining
and expanding Larchmont’s canopy of trees, for example.
Want to get rid of a tree or bush?
If your street tree needs to be pruned or taken down, the
Department of Public Works is the agency to contact. DPW
will consult with the arborist and do what’s needed
to protect the public from falling timber.
However, if you have any extra shrubs, the Parks and Trees
Committee may be interested. They’re looking for donations
of healthy bushes that might be appropriate additions to
our local parks.
