This years honorees are three local leaders who have nurtured
LMC-TV since its inception in 1983. To represent the Eighties,
former Larchmont Mayor Miriam Curnin heads the list. She
is followed by former Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Joe Lanza
who supported LMC-TV during the Nineties, and Town of Mamaroneck
Supervisor Valerie O'Keeffe, who has been providing continued
stewardship into the Twenty-first Century.
LMC-TV has evolved over the years to become a vital link
for obtaining information about local government and community
activities. Originally, LMC-TV covered
just one municipal meeting per month. Now it covers over one hundred meetings
a year. It also provides access to any local community group who wishes to
inform the public
of its mission, function or need. Access to local channels is available to
anyone who lives or works in the community.
In its twenty years, LMC-TV has always depended upon the hard work of hundreds
of volunteers for its success. Volunteers tape many of the community events
and local board meetings, and more hands are always needed. LMC-TV’s live broadcasts of local board meetings help
inform the public and inspire participation in local government.
It’s not unusual to have a citizen show up at a public
meeting to join a discussion he or she had been viewing at
home on TV. This is the kind of retail democracy LMC-TV seeks
to promote in order to increase the quality of political
discourse and the openness of government.
