Enjoy Halloween All Month Long
by Judy Silberstein
(October 8, 2003) If you’re planning how to entertain
the kids this month, look out for the following ghoulish
offerings:
The Haunted House – Through October
Just down the Post Road a few blocks into New Rochelle,
you can scare yourself and your kids at the Haunted House
every weekend in October. The New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce
has been frightening and delighting folks for 26 years, and
this year they bring their scary house to the New Rochelle
Armory on Main Street.
Some old favorites will be leaping out from around corners
or behind doors - Freddie, Jason and Leatherface from the
Texas chain saw Massacre—along with new ghouls and
goblins. There are extra amusements – try the haunted
carousel – and Halloween fare: cotton candy, hot dogs
and ice cream.
New Rochelle “City Soundings” for
October notes, “This acclaimed annual event is the
product of volunteer efforts and draws families from all
of Westchester.”
The House is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening
in October. Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm is “family
day” for younger audiences. Tickets are $7, but there
are discount and group rates available. For times and details,
call: 632-5700 or check the Chamber website at: http://nrchamber.org/
Larchmont Chamber of Commerce Ragamuffin Parade
On Saturday, October 25, school kids from all over are invited
to strut down Larchmont Avenue in their Halloween costumes.
The parade begins at 1:00 pm, but assembly starts at 12:30
at the corner of Palmer and Larchmont Avenues. The march
ends at the Larchmont Fire Station where the firefighters
will hand out hot dogs and drinks.
Outside Village Hall there will be an assortment of fun
and educational activities: fire engines, fire safety demonstrations,
a jumping castle, and vendors. A photographer will be set
up at the gazebo.
The parade is a joint effort between the Chamber, the Larchmont
Merchants Association and the Fire Department.
Larchmont Chamber Halloween Window

The Chamber is also sponsoring its annual window painting
activity on Sunday October 26. Registration is at the Corner
Store on Palmer Avenue and behind Foley Hardware on Sunday

Central School Scare Fair
Update from the Central PTA: The Central School Parent Teachers
Association will once again be sponsoring
the annual Scare Fair event at the school on Sunday, October
26 from 12 to 4
pm. This event is open to the public and there is no charge
for admission.
The Scare Fair is the largest event coordinated by the
Central PTA and
includes hundreds of parent, teacher and student volunteers.
This year’s Scare Fair will include several thrilling
new rides such as Go
Karts and Twin Spin as well as old favorites like the Batting
Cage and
Candyland. There are also numerous games; art, and activity
booths; and, a
separate room for activities for younger children called
Kiddyland. For the
first time, the Central School Tiger Band will be performing
during the
fair. Food and beverages will be for sale outside as well
as an assortment
of delicious home-baked goodies for sale indoors at the “Country
Kitchen”.
The Scare Fair is also the major fundraising initiative
sponsored by the
Central PTA; and, there are a number of ways for families
to participate at
all levels. The exciting Silent Auction, which promises to
be bigger than
ever, will be held inside the main auditorium (LGI). There,
community
members can bid on tickets to arts and sporting events, spa
treatments,
restaurant gift certificates and much more, all while supporting
Central
School. As a new feature this year, parents will also be
able to bid on
special art projects created by individual classes at Central.
The fair
also features raffles for both the beautiful and bountiful
grade level theme
baskets as well as the chance to go to lunch with a favorite
teacher.
“The Scare Fair is truly an event by the community
for the community,” said
Laurie Girsky, P.T.A. Co-President. “What makes this
event special is that
our children see their parents and teachers volunteering
their time for a
fun family event that enables us to enrich our school’s
programs for the
rest of the year.”
The Scare Fair will take place rain or shine. For more information
about the
Scare Fair, contact Emily Hoffner at esaltzman@hotmail.com.
