Subject: Here’s the ‘dirt’ on summer camps
Deciding on camp for James. He chose Space Camp last two
summers.
This year he likes Military Adventure Camp…or as I
fondly call it: Vietnam Revisited Camp. James will go there
when hell freezes over or Gucci goes on sale…whichever
comes first.

I hear you. Set aside emotional, though well founded,
reaction. Logically weigh pros and cons of both camps.

Space
Camp:
Sparkling dormitory bunks…daily scheduled showers &
calls to home. Counselor meets & greets in clean white
shirt, whistle & ID badge round his neck. Activities include
astronaut-training w/lessons in weightlessness…lunar
landing…space walk…satellite repair…performing
deeds for the good of mankind. Each evening an exciting film
about space exploration.
Vietnam
Camp:
Sleep in dirt…kind of naturally clean up as you learn
to cross a raging river…no calls home cause what kinda
babyboy calls his Mama from the jungle? Counselor wears camouflage
and screams and tags you w/humiliating nick name…(I
made that nickname part up but cannot be far from truth).
Activities include learning how to escape your downed helicopter
as the water rushes in (not making that up)…being hunted
in forest by senior officers while you organize your team
for survival… and moonless night missions where 12 year
olds learn how to think on no sleep and no food as they struggle
to save a captured comrade.
Which camp would you choose?

Of course we had to play checkers with the Chess pieces cause
half the checker pieces were missing. Some things never change.
E-mail me at Val@larchmontgazette.com
w/your own camp stories…that…as you know…never
seem to change with each new camper generation.
