Larchmont Fire Signals:
Interpreting Those Whistle Patterns

(July 15, 2003) A Gazette reader writes: "At least three times last night the fire whistle went off. The pattern was always 1-6.

As I guess you know, those patterns mean something. Most of us, however, don't know what they mean.

How about a listing of what those patterns mean, in the Gazette, in a printable format, so that, when I am awakened at 4 am by the siren, I can look at the trusty chart that I printed out from the Gazette and determine that, probably, it's not my house that's on fire?"

Dear Reader: What an excellent suggestion! Fire Department Captain Tom Andersen advises that the code is being revised, but that new code cards are not yet available.

Fire Horn Signals. The Village of Larchmont is served by both professional and volunteer fire fighters. Volunteers receive information about fire calls in two ways: pager and fire horn signals. If a volunteer cannot hear a pager, s/he can still know where to respond by deciphering the fire horn signal. Each residence has a three digit code or "box number" associated with its location. To call volunteers to a locale, the fire horn will emit the determined number of blasts. So, for example, if you reside near the corner of Winans and Sherwood Drives, your box number is "112" and the fire horn will sound: one blast (pause); one blast (pause); two blasts. For a full alarm, two rounds will sound.

Cracking the Fire Horn Signal Code. When the fire horn sounds, if you want to know the location of the alarm, you need to consult the tables provided below. Roughly, if the horn starts with one blast look in the table for Zone 1; two blasts, look in Zone 2, etc.
