Mamaroneck "Gears Up" for McEnroe Appearance

Mcenroe(June 12, 2003) John McEnroe, one of the all-time tennis greats, is coming to Westchester on July 10th to play the first of four
matches as the feature player for the NY Sportimes.

The NY Sportimes, one of the 10 franchises in the World Team Tennis Professional League, will also be making their home debut on July 10th at the newly-built 2,000-seat Sportime stadium at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck, NY. The Sportimes will be playing 7 home matches in July.

McEnroe will have his work cut out for him in this first home match as he will playing the singles against Boris Becker, the feature player for the NY Buzz. These two rivals will be coming to their showdown in Harbor Island Park, straight from Wimbledon, the site of some of their most legendary triumphs.

McEnroe will be facing other tough challengers this season as he tries to lead the Sportimes to the WTT Championship. On July 19, in a fascinating match up, McEnroe will be facing the great Martina Navratilova in mixed doubles as she comes to Westchester with her team, the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Currently the #1 ranked 35 & over player in the world, McEnroe is still playing world-class tennis. He retains his fiery on-court demeanor and his intense desire to win. He is also the lead color commentator for Wimbledon and the U.S. Open Tennis Tournaments.

"John was such an inspiring leader throughout his years as the star of the U.S. Davis Cup team," says Eric Fromm, General Manager of the NY Sportimes. "We expect his on-court intensity to drive us as a team."

Joining John McEnroe on the NY Sportimes is his younger brother Patrick. Patrick, a minority owner of the franchise, is a former top 30 player in the world and is currently the U.S. Davis Cup Captain and a color commentator for NBC, ESPN, and USA Network. Rounding out the Sportimes' roster are up-and-coming players: Bea Bielik, Ellis Ferreira, and Shuai Peng.
