Chatsworth 4th Graders Finalists For Musical Art

by Judy Silberstein

(May 26, 2003) For the third year in a row, Chatsworth Avenue fourth graders Alice and Daphne Taranto have won prizes in the musical art competition sponsored by Music K-8, the magazine for teachers of music. “I am very proud of these girls,” said their music teacher, Judy O’Savio. “They have a tremendous talent – both music and art.”

Alice plays flute and Daphne plays alto saxophone and harp. The two are members of the Chatsworth band, led by Peter Kanyuk.

“Music K-8” is a “think tank” for teachers, explained O’Savio. The magazine holds regular contests and encourages students to submit artwork for possible publication inside or on the cover.

After two years of winning honorable mentions, Alice and Daphne this year became two of only 19 finalists out of over 19,000 entries submitted. Alice won in the “Most Humorous” category and Daphne was a finalist in the general category.

Now that they’ve reached the finalist level, are they ready to retire? Not yet. They’re planning to enter the musical art contest once again next year.
