June 8 Mamaroneck Village Street Fair:
Celebrating the Old & the New
by Tom Murphy
(May 21, 2003) On Sunday June 8, the Village
of Mamaroneck will celebrate the rebirth of its downtown shopping
area by looking back at 300
years of its past. Known
as the “Historic Harbor Street Fair,” the extravaganza will go on
between 11 am and 4 pm, from Mamaroneck Avenue to Harbor Island Park. Among
the Fair’s
features will be three tall ships in the
harbor, Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactments, and silent movies. Village
merchants will showcase their
wares and local non-profit organizations will be educating the public about
their
missions.

The driving forces behind the Fair are the chairwomen of
the event, Sunny Goldberg and Carolyn Pomeranz. Both Sunny
and Carolyn are long-time advocates of improving
the downtown shopping area. Their efforts contributed to the now completed
Mamaroneck Avenue Streetscape which
replaced sidewalks, buried
power lines and doubled the number of trees on the avenue.
Sunny and Carolyn have set their sights on people within
and without the Village. They hope the Fair will attract
folks from outside the Village to take a fresh
look at Mamaroneck. They also expect the Fair to give residents a renewed
sense of pride in their downtown and all the Village has
to offer as a place to live.
Sunny and Carolyn have logged countless hours in preparation
for the June 8 party and have enlisted scores of volunteers
from every neighborhood in
the
diverse
village to help out in various capacities. To illustrate the bi-partisan
nature of their support, they former Mayors Joe Lanza (Republican) and
Debbie Chapin
(Democrat) are working together to insure the full participation of the
business community. The organizers hope is the fair
becomes an annual event.
Anyone wishing to volunteer in any capacity on June 8
is asked to contact Mamaroneck Village Hall at 777-7722.
