Three Tall Ships Will Come A'Sailing on June 8:
At Mamaroneck’s Historic Harbor Street Fair

by Judy Silberstein

(May 14, 2003) A fleet of three tall ships will be sailing into Mamaroneck Harbor on Sunday, June 8 as part of Mamaroneck’s first annual Historic Harbor Street Fair running from 11am to 4pm.

The Quinnipiack, the Soundwaters, and the Providence will be anchoring in the harbor to allow onboard tours and hands-on history and ecology lessons. Aboard the Quinnipiack, there will be a marine biologist and a touch tank of marine life. Presentations on the Soundwaters, a replica of a 19th century Chesapeake Bay sharpie, will focus on the ecology and history of Long Island Sound. The Providence is a reproduction of John Paul Jones’ first command during the Revolutionary War, with which he sank or captured 40 British ships.

QuinnipiacThe tall ship tours are just one of many events planned for the Historic Harbor Street Fair celebrating Mamaroneck’s past as a sea-fairing community.

Fairgoers will encounter: Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactments, 18th & 19th century children’s games, a 1940’s USO canteen, and a tribute to Mamaroneck’s golden silent movies era. Throughout the business district, strollers will find glimpses of Mamaroneck’s past revealed through the vintage photographs displayed in store windows. Along the Avenue will be roving performers, live music and games, along with booths and exhibitions featuring a wide variety of entertainment, information, food, art and antiques.
