Red Cross Summer Safety School 2003:
MAY 15 to JUNE
18
Press Release from the Westchester Red Cross
(April 28, 2003) The American Red Cross in Westchester County
will launch its Summer Safety School for Westchester residents
on May
15, offering about 60 classes in safety training at 11 different
locations throughout the county. Classes will include adult
CPR, infant/child CPR, water safety, first-aid basics, automated
external defibrillator essentials, lifeguard training, a
new lifeguard management orientation—even a class on
pet first-aid for dogs and cats. Tuition ranges from $40
for a six-hour community water safety class to $250 for 40
hours of lifeguard training. Classes will run through June
18th.
“We offer these courses before summer arrives in order
to train as many Westchester residents as possible to prepare,
prevent and respond to the emergencies that can occur at
a moment’s notice – both in and out of the water,” said
Barbara Bischoff, the Red Cross’ director of Health
and Safety services.
The Red Cross is also offering special courses for the professional
rescuer and those who would like to become instructors and
have already met certain prerequisites. A new lifeguard management
orientation will be held at the Chapter offices in White
Plains on Friday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to noon, and again
on Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. The course certifies
students to teach the Red Cross Lifeguard Management course,
which covers the responsibilities of the lifeguard supervisor,
risk management and emergency response planning. Tuition
is $30.
Other instructor course offerings are water safety instructor,
lifeguarding instructor, first aid & CPR instructor,
waterfront lifeguard, babysitters’ training instructor
and oxygen administration for the professional rescuer.
Courses will be held at Ardsley Middle School; Theodore
D. Young Community Center, Greenburgh; Camp Hillard in Scarsdale;
Manhattanville College, Purchase; Sparkle Lake, Yorktown;
Mount Pleasant Recreation, Valhalla; PACE University; SUNY
Purchase; YWCA of White Plains and the Chapter office in
