Jazz Great at MHS Fundraiser May 7:
Maynard Ferguson
& Big Bop Nouveau Band
by Noah Nathan
(April 15, 2003) On Wednesday, May 7, Maynard Ferguson,
one of the most prolific jazz trumpet players of our time,
will
be playing
in Mamaroneck
High School’s McLain
Auditorium. Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band will be appearing in a fundraiser
for the MHS Music Department.
The opening act of the evening is the MHS Jazz Band “A,” fresh
from its first place win at the Greenwich High School Jazz
Festival. The funds raised will support all of the music
ensembles at MHS, including the bands, orchestra, and vocal
groups, which make up one of the most successful music departments
in the region.
Considered a child prodigy in his early years, Maynard
Ferguson has been touring since 1941, when he was only 13.
Before taking off on his own in the 60’s,
Ferguson played with famous big bandleaders Stan Kenton, Jimmy Dorsey, and
Charlie Barnett. Many important musicians of today’s jazz scene have
played with Ferguson’s bands, including Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea,
Slide Hampton, Joe Zawinul, and Chuck Mangione.
Tickets are still available. For the fundraiser to be successful,
we need to sell as many tickets as possible. General Admission
tickets are $25. To
