New Rochelle Democrats Endorse Bramson Over Tocci
Margin In Home Town Of Both Candidates Is Thirty-Five To One

For Immediate Release:

( July 15, 2002 ) Noam Bramson picked up another key endorsement last night in the race for the New York State Assembly as the New Rochelle Democratic Committee voted overwhelmingly to support his candidacy. More than 100 Democratic district leaders, an unusually large number, participated either in person or by proxy. The tally for Bramson over Tocci in a weighted vote was 3577 to 111, a thirty-five to one margin.

New Rochelle is the hometown of both Bramson and his opponent, incumbent Assemblyman Ronald C. Tocci. The vote of the New Rochelle Committee is, therefore, considered an especially significant barometer of Democratic opinion.

New Rochelle Democrats also weighed in on Tocci's recent decision to circulate Republican Party nominating petitions. The surprise move has stirred anger among Democratic activists, who have called it an attempt to deny voters a choice in November's general election. The New Rochelle Committee called on Tocci to either decline the Republican nomination or withdraw from the Democratic primary.

New Rochelle Democratic Party Chair Arnold Klugman said that the Committee's vote sent an important message to citizens throughout the 91st Assembly District. "Both candidates have deep roots in this community. The lopsided margin is a testament to the high regard people have for Noam's record and ability. It is also a stunning vote of no confidence in Ron from the people who know him best."

Kathie Davidson, one of several Democrats who had signed a petition calling for the special meeting, said that the strong support for Bramson reflected sentiment throughout New Rochelle. "Noam is among the most popular and effective public officials our city has ever seen," said Davidson. "There is real enthusiasm for his candidacy. By contrast, Ron Tocci has abandoned our party and abandoned our community. Even people who have known and worked with Ron for years are angry and disappointed. We simply had to act."

In remarks before the Committee, Bramson pledged to make education, health care, and environmental protection his chief priorities in the Assembly. He also expressed determination to work in partnership with community leaders along the Sound Shore. Tocci has frequently clashed with local elected officials and has been faulted for failing to deliver adequate state aid to his district.

"I am truly honored by the support of the New Rochelle Democrats," said Bramson, "and I will work my hardest to represent the values and interests of the entire Sound Shore."
