Mamaroneck Town Board Deliberates N.
Chatsworth No Parking Zone
by Harriet Kline
(November 7, 2002) At its regular November 7 meeting,
the Town of Mamaroneck Board held yet another public
meeting to address visibility problems in and around
a North Chatsworth Avenue driveway. The Board has been
considering the situation for almost a year. The speed
of North Chatsworth Avenue traffic (down a hill) and
the ubiquitous SUVs parked north and south of the property
have prompted the property owner to petition the Board
to establish a no parking zone near his driveway to
improve sight lines and prevent potential collisions.
The Traffic Committee had already advised the Board
to approve the petition, but the Board has been reluctant
to do so because of the parking crunch in the neighborhood
and the fear of setting a precedent.
No one in the audience spoke against the proposed
legislation, but a vote was postponed at the property
owner's suggestion until more specific dimensions can
be obtained. The Board attorney also promised to investigate
the possibility of already existing traffic law regarding
parking within three feet of all driveways.
Board Approvals
At the recommendation of the Town Attorney William
Maker, the Board approved the revision of the existing
Town Code to include the position of Director of Building
Code Enforcement and Land Use Administration.
Other business included the unanimous approval of the
appointment of John Anthony Ortese as alternate member
of the Zoning and Planning Boards should a conflict
of interest issue make an alternate member necessary.
The Board unanimously approved a request to lend the
Mamaroneck Free Library the two Town voting machines
to facilitate the Library District's December 10 budget
and trustee vote.
Five separate certiorari settlements, involving
properties on Boston Post Road and Chatsworth Avenue,
were unanimously approved.
Town Administrator Stephen Altieri requested authorization
for a number of winter recreation staff members for
the Hommocks Pool and the Hommocks ice skating facility.
The Board unanimously voted to approve the request.
