Town of Mamaroneck Begins 2003 Budget
Process
by Harriet Kline
( October 17, 2002
)Town Administrator Stephen Altieri presented a tentative
year 2003 budget to the Town Board at its regular meeting
on Wednesday October 16th. This presentation marks the
beginning of the budget review process which will include
a series of work sessions, a public hearing on December
4th and culminate in the adoption of a Town budget by
December 20th.
According to Mr. Altieri, the increases in the budget
are due to three outside factors: (1) mandated contributions
to the New York State pension fund; (2) increased Town
contribution to employee health care benefits; and (3)
anticipated higher premiums for Town liability insurance.
These are increases that the Town shares with all other
state municipalities.
The budget projections anticipate a tax rate increase
of 6.2%.
Copies of the proposed budget are available at the
Town Clerk's office. A budget calendar is available
on the Town website (www.TownofMamaroneck.org).
Copies of the budget summary will also be placed on
the web site.
The October 16 Town Board meeting also included public
hearings on a Traffic Commission recommendation to restrict
parking near a Carlton House driveway and the adoption
of a law enabling both the Zoning Board of Appeals and
the Planning Board to select alternate members in cases
of conflict of interest. A proposal to enable the bi-municipal
Coastal Zone Management Commission to call special meetings
was tabled for coordination with the Village of Larchmont.
In their role as Fire Commissioners, the Town Board
members approved all claims read and encouraged community
participation in two upcoming events at the Town firehouse:
(1) Open House on Saturday, October 27 from 12 noon
to 3 pm. and (2) an "all you can eat for $10 dinner"
on behalf of the Explorer Post of the firehouse to be
held on Friday, November 1st.
At the conclusion of the meeting Councilwomen Seligson
and Myers read two proclamations - one on behalf of
the 30th anniversary of the Clean Air Act and one proclaiming
October 28 through November 1 as School Board Recognition
Week.
The next Town Board meeting has been rescheduled to
Thursday November 7th.
