$120,000 Grant for Flint Park
by Judy Silberstein
(
October 3, 2002) The Village of Larchmont’s efforts
to improve Flint Park will be receiving a $120,375 boost
thanks to a recently awarded federal environmental protection
grant. A press release from Governor George E. Pataki
announced more than $1.7 million in federal fund grants
for projects in the Hudson Valley region (See:
Press Release). At the very bottom of the lengthy
release is a brief announcement of the $120,375 Environmental
Protection Fund grant for Flint Park to “expand
and improve playing fields, restore native plant life,
provide waterfront access and visibility.”
“We’re thrilled,” reported Deputy
Mayor Chris Verni. “This past weekend we were
looking at plans for what we’d do once we’re
finished with the SSO and recapture the leaf collection
area. This makes it that much more of a reality.”
Verni added, “A great deal of the credit goes
to the Mayor. I know this has been a priority of his
for years. He’s been patiently applying for these
grants for years and his perseverance has finally paid
off."
“It’s a wonderful gift to Larchmont,”
said Trustee Marlene Kolbert. “The Village had
applied for the grant for five years and now it will
be helpful for the renovation of Flint Park.”
She went on to note, “The New
York Times reported today that Governor Pataki has
been generously spreading money around New York State.
It’s lucky for Larchmont that this is a state
election year.”
Currently,
there is major construction underway on a large storm
water holding tank (SSO) in an area at the back of Flint
Park that recently served as a halfway stop for collected
leaves. The underground tank will be hidden by a modest,
stone-faced building (see picture) leaving the surrounding
waterfront land open for other uses. Plans outlined
in the grant would open the Flint Park waterfront to
the public for the first time in decades. To continue
preparing for the post-construction future, Verni said,
"We'll be circulating plans among the appropriate
committees."
