Senator Oppenheimer: Fight to Maintain
School Construction Aid Will be Difficult
by Judy Silberstein
( September 23, 2002) "What an improvement this
is!" exclaimed New York State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer
as she viewed Mamaroneck High School's new science wing
on Monday afternoon. Senator Oppenheimer was touring
the schools with School Board President Bob Martin as
part of "Legislators Back to School Week."

facilities in the new high school science wing.

"It was certainly needed," the Senator declared
as she remembered how grim parts of the high school
building had appeared when her youngest child was there
fourteen years ago. Until recently, there have been
very few changes at the high school. With the passage
of a $49 million construction bond by local voters in
2001, the district has the funds to make major renovations
and some additions at the high school and throughout
the district. However, the schools rely on New York
State aid for a portion of the construction funding.
Senator Oppenheimer said she will be "Fighting
to maintain the same ratio of construction aid as before,
but it will be difficult." "We will support
you on that," affirmed School Board President Martin.
