Official Tally Stalled in September
10 Primary:
Check Back Later
by Judy Silberstein
(September 17, 2002) It’s been more than a week
since the Primary elections on September 10, yet official
vote counts are still unavailable. According to the
Westchester County Board of Elections, the final vote
totals will not be released until the New York State
Supreme Court officially certifies the entire election.
This often takes two weeks or more, since any problem
anywhere in the state will hold up the certification.
At the moment, because of ongoing difficulties in the
Naomi Matusow-Adam Bradley race in Assembly District
89, the entire process may be slower than usual.
The unofficial count from the County Board of Elections
showed Matusow ahead of Bradley by 99 votes out of 4995
cast. However, when election workers rechecked the tallies
on September 17, they found votes from two districts
had been overlooked. Now, Adam Bradley is ahead by 31
votes. On Wednesday afternoon the election commissioners
were huddled in a meeting attempting to decide what
their next steps should be.
In Mamaroneck, it is unlikely that recanvassing would
impact the outcome of the election. The unofficial count
shows Bramson ahead of Tocci 62% to 38% in the overall
total for Assembly District 91. However, until the vote
is certified, the County Board of Elections will not
release the tallies for each precinct. Furthermore,
neither the unofficial nor the certified precinct numbers
will be posted on the County’s website. Local
voters interested in how the candidates fared in particular
parts of the 91st district are out of luck for now.
Larchmont Gazette will continue to monitor the situation
at the County Board of Election. As soon as the County
Board releases the precinct numbers, the counts will
be posted on Larchmont Gazette. According to the County
spokesperson, this could take a few days, or a few weeks.
