DISTRICT MATH SCORES UNVEILED:
Largest Gains at Hommocks & Mamaroneck Avenue School

by Judy Silberstein

( September 14, 2002; Revised October 22, 2003) Overall, the 2002 fourth graders in Mamaroneck scored about as well as their 2001 counterparts, but the 2002 Mamaroneck Avenue fourth graders topped the previous year's crop by 8 percentage points, and this year's eighth graders bested last year's by 9 percentage points. Even more impressive was the 15 point leap in eight graders scoring at the highest level. Said Hommocks PTA Co-President Lisa Senter, "It's a movement in the right direction. It's very good."

Last May, fourth and eighth graders throughout Mamaroneck and the rest of New York toiled over standardized math tests. On Friday, September 13, the New York State Department of Education finally unveiled the official results.

For the Mamaroneck School District, 93% of fourth graders met or exceeded state standards, which is almost identical to last year's 94%, but higher than the 82% for all of Westchester and 68% for all of New York state. Of Mamaroneck's eighth graders, 85% met or exceeded state standards, which is higher than last year's 76% and higher than this year's 60% in Westchester and 48% in New York State.

Overall elementary scores showed only slight changes, however, a more detailed analysis shows scores have risen dramatically at Mamaroneck Avenue School. During the first year of the new state math tests, only 51% of students met or exceeded math standards at Mamaroneck Avenue School. During the next years they improved steadily, from 51% to 52% to 69%, and this year they jumped to 87%. "W'ere very pleased with the progress at Mamaroneck Avenue School," said PTA Co-President Alice Tenney. "It proves what hard work from teachers and students can do," she added.

Scores at Central School have also risen dramatically from the initial year of 89% to this year's 97%. Central PTA Co-President Pam Mizrachi was delighted with the results. "The kids have been working hard and the teachers have been working together in order to help the kids," she explained.

The rise at the Hommocks, reflected the rise at the state and Westchester County level - 9 percentage points for the Hommocks and 8 for the state and county. According to the State Education Department report, "Middle school math scores rose significantly for the first time last year, not only statewide but among all types of schools and racial groups."
