Larchmont 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
by Paula Eisenberg

Mayor Ken Bialo, former
Mayor Cheryl Lewy, members of Larchmont Board of Trustees
and uniformed
services in moment of silence for victims of World Trade
Center attacks
(September 11, 2002) In a solemn ceremony at the flagpole
at Village Hall, Larchmont honored the memory of local
residents who died in the World Trade Center attacks
one year ago. Mayor Ken Bialo also marked the self-sacrifice
of the police officers, fire-fighters and rescue workers
who perished that day. He read the names of the eleven
area residents among the dead. An honor guard of Larchmont
police officers fired three rifle volleys at 8:46, the
exact time the first hijacked plane crashed into the
World Trade Center.
Approximately sixty people gathered to pay their respects
at the busy corner of Larchmont Avenue and the Boston
Post Road, standing quietly as Village officials helped
lower the flags to half-staff and lay wreaths at the
foot of the flagpole. One woman murmured, "I can't
believe it's been a whole year since that awful morning."
Her eyes beginning to brim with tears, she said, "Here
we are on another beautiful fall morning, and everything
has changed."
