Hommocks Diving Boards Spring Back Into Action

by Judy Silberstein

They've been quiet all summer, but the diving boards should be back in action by the end of the week.

( September 3, 2002 ) There’s good news for Mamaroneck’s competitive divers: the New York Board of Health has granted a variance to allow diving at the Hommocks swimming pool. The diving boards were removed earlier in the summer after the Board of Health determined that the shape of the pool’s diving well and the distance between the boards and the roof beams did not meet the latest safety codes. Because of extensive work done on the pool’s filtration systems, the Board of Health is requiring the Mamaroneck School district to upgrade a number of other aspects of the pool to meet regulations enacted in the past few years. (See August Pool Information Meeting )

Mamaroneck Athletic Director Dave McGuckin announced that the diving boards will be back in place by the end of this week. For the past two weeks, there have been letters and phone calls flying back and forth between the schools and the Health Department. “It’s been the focus of our existence,” said McGuckin. Finally, at the end of the week, the district received the news they had been waiting for: the boards can return.

School Board President Bob Martin remarked that the Hommocks pool program impacts a wider swath of the community than most people realize. In addition to the Mamaroneck divers, there are divers from around the county practicing at the Hommocks, including those from Bedford, White Plains, Rye, Pelham and Eastchester. With approximately seven to ten divers on these teams and up to twenty from Mamaroneck, there may be close to 100 competitive divers bouncing on the boards throughout the season. After a quiet summer, the boards are going to be active again.
