September 11 Anniversary Observances

(August 27, 2002) The tragic events of last September 11 affected this whole nation, and the world. But here in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, so close to New York City, the wounds are especially deep and still painful. Municipal, religious and private organizations plan observances to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Village of Larchmont: At 8:46 am on September 11, there will be an honor guard ceremony at the flagpole at Village Hall. The U.S. flag will be lowered to half-staff and will remain lowered until after the interfaith service on September 12.

Town/Village of Mamaroneck: Interfaith Memorial, Sept. 11, 7:30 pm at Harbor Island

Westchester County: Community Gathering, September 11, 8:30 am, in front of the County Office Building, 148 Martine Avenue, White Plains.

Community-wide Interfaith Service: September 12, 7:00 pm, Larchmont Temple, Larchmont Avenue, Larchmont.

St. Augustine's Church: A Memorial Mass, 7:30 pm on September 11, followed by the unveiling of a bronze plaque bearing names of Larchmont residents lost in the attack on the World Trade Center.

St. John's Church: On September 10, 8 pm, a memorial eucharist service, with music and silent prayer. September 11, 9:00 am, informal eucharist serivice. Sanctuary will be open all day for prayer.

Larchmont Avenue Church: A service of prayer and remembrance will be held on September 11 at 7 p.m. in Russell Hall.

Friends in Deed: FIND, an organization dedicated to supporting families in Larchmont and Mamaroneck who lost a loved one in the WTC disaster, has set September 14 for its second annual CommUNITY Walk. CommUNITY Walk II will begin at 1:00 at Memorial Park on Myrtle Boulevard (next to Carl’s Restaurant) in Larchmont. There will be a 2.5-mile walk through Larchmont and Mamaroneck as well as 1-mile mini walk for kids. Proceeds from the walk will go to an educational fund for the children in the community who lost a parent on September 11.

Pre-registration will take place on Saturday, September 7 from
9:00 AM-12: 00 PM at Sound Federal Savings on Mamaroneck Avenue in Mamaroneck and from 9:00 AM to 1 PM at Citibank on Palmer Avenue in Larchmont. Registration in advance costs $10 per person or $35 per family. People can also register the day of at Memorial Park from 10:00 AM – Noon for $15 per person and $45 per family.
