Town Board Considering Compensation
For Residents Kept Out of the Pool
by Judy Silberstein
( August 22, 2002) Hommocks pool was on the minds
of Mamaroneck School and Town officials Wednesday, August
21, as each authority pondered problems with the aging
facility. The Mamaroneck School Facilities Committee
met with residents to update them on the pool’s
status and on the continuing situation that is preventing
use of the diving boards. (See for more.) Next door
at the Town Center, the topic of discussion was how
to compensate pool permit holders who were kept from
using the large pool earlier in the summer when it was
closed due to cloudy water.
The Board is considering offering affected permit holders
a discount on next year’s permit fee. They had
thought about extending the permit period beyond the
usual year, but keeping track of the extension would
require unreasonable amounts of time and effort, explained
Town Recreation Supervisor Jill Fisher.

The Board discussed the unusual circumstances surrounding
this year’s closures. “The reason this is
being done is because of the unbearable heat on the
holiday weekend when the pool was closed,” stressed
Supervisor Valerie O’Keeffe.
After debating various levels of compensation, the
Board settled on the recommendation for a 10% discount.
Said Supervisor O’Keeffe, “This is a good
will gesture, but it will not appease the people who
have been concerned about the pool.”
