Fire Shuts Down Venerable Village Paint Store

by Paula Eisenberg

( July 29, 2002 ) An early morning fire on Sunday, July 28 damaged Village Paint Supply, 2084 Boston Post Road in Larchmont. "We have a lot of water damage and soot in the store," said manager Lisa Pacifico, "It's a real mess in there." The Larchmont Fire Department firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the basement, where it appears to have started.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, according to store owner Daniel Goetze, Jr. "The arson investigators tell me it wasn't electrical," he said, "And it seems to have started in an area where we were storing metal and plastic parts for window treatments, nothing flammable. We can't figure it out."

Goetze and Pacifico urge customers who may be waiting for custom paints, wallpaper or window treatment orders to call the Mamaroneck store, at 698-2494. "We'll do everything we can to accommodate them," said Pacifico. "But

we'll be back here, probably in about two weeks," she added.

Village Paint owner Goetze managed a smile even as he ruefully surveyed the sooty water pooling on the floor at the rear entrance to the store. "This is a great town," he said. "Everybody's been so helpful, and I just want to thank them all. Miriam Curnin and her husband brought us coffee and donuts, and John Fox next door is letting us use his electricity. Everybody's been great, and I want them all to know how much we appreciate their help."

In 1922, a similar fire at Larchmont's Robinson Hardware inspired the advertisement below. For the complete story, see 1922 Year in Review - Business.

We may look smudged and smeary;
but we're "comin thru" and cheery."
