on at the Larchmont Avenue entrance to the building.
"That wooden structure is just a temporary job
supervisor's space," Rev. Crawford said. "This
construction project has been years in the making, to
upgrade our church for people with special needs."
Since the sanctuary was finished in 1929, Rev. Crawford
said, there has been no accommodation for people who
have trouble moving around. "The church board realized
a couple of years ago that we needed to retrofit the
building," the pastor said. The new, larger Larchmont
Avenue entrance will lead to an elevator, providing
easy access to the lower fellowship room.
"We broke ground on the Accessibility Project
on Mother's Day, and we hope to be finished in November,"
Crawford said. Funds for the project are coming from
the church's endowment and some private gifts. "The
church has a birthright, rooted in hospitality, to be
welcoming to all of our neighbors," Crawford said.
"We're happy and pleased that this project is going
so well."
To gain perspective on the current construction project, take a look at the church seen below in a postcard from Larchmont, New York The Way it Was by James H. and Constance Levi circa 1928.
