State Releases School Test Scores
Mamaroneck Avenue School Scores Another Big Increase

(July 11, 2002) The State Department of Education today released results of English Language Arts exams given at elementary and middle schools throughout the state this year. For the Mamaroneck School District, 75% of eighth graders and 87% of fourth graders met or exceeded the state standards.

State-wide, performance at the elementary school level improved for the fourth consecutive year, as 61.5 % of students met the standards. In the Mamaroneck School District, the proportion of students meeting the standards increased slightly from 86% to 87%.

The largest increase was at Mamaroneck Avenue School where the proportion of student meeting the standards increased from 69% to 78%. This was a second year of improvement - last year the Mamaroneck Avenue scores had increased from 52% to 69%.

At Chatsworth School, the proportion meeting the standards increased from 85% to 95%, and at Central School, from 87% to 91%. At Murray Avenue School, the percentage scores declined from 95% to 83%.

Statewide, Language Arts 8th grade scores showed fewer students with serious academic difficulties. The percentage of students scoring in the lowest level declined from 13.6 percent to 7.2 percent. The percentage of students meeting the standards remained approximately the same as last year, 44.9 percent. At the Hommocks Middle School only 1% of the students scored at the lowest Level 1. The proportion of students meeting all standards declined slightly from 79% to 75%.
