BREAKING NEWS: GOP Endorses Democrat Ron Tocci for Assembly
June 24, 2002 3:45 pm
James Cavanaugh, Westchester County Republican Party Chairman, confirmed his party's endorsement of Ron Tocci for New York State Assembly District 91. Mr. Tocci has held a seat in the Assembly for the last 18 years as a Democrat.
For the first time in many years, Mr. Tocci faces a challenger for his own party's nomination. However, ever since New Rochelle Councilman Noam Bramson announced his intentions to seek the Democratic nomination, there have been indications that the Republicans might offer Tocci their line.
Mr. Cavanaugh reported that the Republican Committee made its decision on Wednesday, June 19 after adjourning from its convention. The decision was made after consulting with party leaders in the area. Republicans have been circulating the necessary nominating petitions for Tocci since Thursday.
When asked why the Republicans were nominating a Democrat, Mr. Cavanaugh replied, "Ron Tocci has a very moderate voting record and is not known as a very partisan individual. I believe he'll serve the district well. "
At this point, it appears that Ron Tocci will continue pursuit of the Democratic nomination even after he accepts the Republicans' offer to be their candidate.
Should Tocci win the Democratic primary in September, he would then face no challenger in the November general election. However, if Bramson wins the Democratic primary, he would have to face Tocci again in November.
