Getting the Most from the Gazette

by Paula Eisenberg

Larchmont Gazette's front page, showing three columns

(October 24, 2002) We're gratified that so many of you are enjoying the Gazette, and we want to keep improving it, making it a real community resource. We're using the power of the Internet to bring you continually updated news about our towns, reported and written by your neighbors, for you. Make sure you're getting the most from this site!

For instance, are you able to see the whole front page? You should see three columns: on the left is the main menu, where you can click on large categories, like News, Politics, 10538 Guide. Clicking on those categories will take you deeper into the site, where you'll see lists of stories arranged chronologically, newest at the top of the page. Or you'll find groupings of useful information, our forums, free classified ads, and much more.

In the middle column, you'll find featured stories and photos. Be sure to scroll down to see everything. We use the new type of hyperlink, without underlining, so don't be afraid to click on a headline. It just might take you somewhere!

On the right side of the page, you'll find another column full of the most recent headlines. Click on one of those, and you'll go straight to the story. Scroll down to see all of the headlines.

Missing Columns?

If you can't see the right-hand column without scrolling horizontally, you either have a pretty old monitor with a low resolution, or you have a newer monitor with your resolution set very low. Our page, like most webpages today, is set for viewing at a resolution of 800x600 or better. We have a Tech Talk article about how to reset your monitor's resolution, so give it a try! It's really not hard to do.

No Deadlines!

We send out a weekly email reminder of what's new on the site, but you don't have to wait until you get it to come by. You can bookmark our site (add it to your Favorites), or just type larchmontgazette.com into your browser's address bar, and visit us frequently. We don't have a regular day when we "put the paper to bed," like a print newspaper does. We update daily, sometimes several times a day, so you will usually find something new here.

Seek and Ye Shall Find!

Can't find an article you heard about? Check the right-column headlines, or use the search engine. At the top of the page, you'll see the Search blank. That's where you'll enter a keyword. Say you want to read about the daysailing program at Horseshoe Harbor. Type in "daysailing" or "Horseshoe Harbor" (without quote marks), click Go, and then wait for the search engine to find the pages where those words appear.

And don't forget: we're your neighbors, and we're just an email away. Write to us at publisher@larchmontgazette.com, or use our feedback form to let us know what's on your mind. We welcome suggestions, story ideas, even constructive brickbats! If you want your concerns about local issues to be public, use our Letters to the Editor form.
