Engine One's First Outing: Larchmont
Fire Department Picnic
photo essay by Ned Benton
(October 6, 2002) The guest of honor at Sunday's Larchmont
Fire Department picnic was Engine One, the 1922 American
LaFrance pumper the volunteer firefighters purchased
from a Washington collector and returned to Larchmont.
This was Engine One's first Larchmont outing under its
own steam; its earlier appearance at the Village Memorial
Day parade was atop a flatbed truck. The firefighters'
children - and the adults - took turns ringing the pumper's
bell and crawling over the antique vehicle. Other picnic
activities included relay races dressed in old firefighter
gear, egg tossing, volleyball and marathon eating.
