Fire Recruits Looking to Give Back to the Community

by Judy Silberstein

(August 8, 2002) A chance to contribute to the community is motivating both Steve Lerner and Trevor McKay to join Larchmont’s Volunteer Fire Department. At the August 5 Board Meeting, Assistant Chief Tom Broderick introduced the new recruits and the Board approved their applications for membership. Next comes training.

It was the events of September 11 that led Lerner to join the Department. “I feel like I’m doing something in the face of the threat that America was facing,” he explained. He was down on Wall Street that day as President and CEO of Zurich Capital Markets, a subsidiary of a large insurance company. He’s still in insurance, but “I’m now working from home and being more of a Dad,” he said. After two years of renting, the Lerner family has purchased a home in the Village, and Lerner is looking to “give back” to his new community.

Trevor McKay is also looking to give back to the community where he’s lived all his life. “The town has been so welcoming to me. They’ve helped me adjust to my disabilities all my life,” he said. McKay was born with spina bifida and uses a wheel chair to get around. He’s looking forward to training, where he hopes to learn about approaches to fighting different kinds of fire. “It would be what I know that would help," said McKay.

Assistant Chief Tom Broderick emphasized that there is much more to the department than fighting interior fires. Volunteers help with the radio and computer systems, for example.

McKay is a member of the Tri-Municipal Human Rights Commission and has been working for the Mamaroneck School District in the Chatsworth library and with the Understanding Handicaps program. He said, “As I work with the students, it’s good for them to see me on the Human Rights Commission and as ‘Fireman Trev,’ out and about helping in the community.” He wants the students to think, “If Trev can help the community, so can I.”

Both the Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont operate with volunteer firefighters working beside professional staff. Looking to join? Information is available at: Emergency Volunteers
