Larchmont Gazette's TOP PICKS
AT TODAY'S NEW ROCHELLE FARMERS' MARKET: July 12, 2002
by Judy Silberstein
"You'll like the fuzzy peaches better than the smooth today, advises farmer David Wengerd from Pennsylvania."
If you don't like the fuzz you can remove it easily by boiling the peaches for a few minutes in a large pot of water. The peeled peaches can be eaten out-of-hand or baked into pies or cobblers. Ask David and he'll find you the bruised ones that are perfect for pies. The Christmas red cherries are sour, he warns, but excellent for baking.
Also excellenet this week: yellow and white corn, shiny zucchini and large white Mexican onions (great for salsa).
Every Friday during the growing season, the New Rochelle Farmers' Market appears on Memorial Highway next to the Library Plaza. There is street parking on Huguenot (Route One) and in nearby lots for shoppers. Many customers walk over from the surrounding apartments. Today, Larchmont resident and home economist Mary McDonald was picking the best of the crops from the heavily laden tables. "Marvelous!" she declared eying the corn."
The farmers are sponsored by the New Rochelle Department of Development, reports Market Manager Sheila Beacher who helps with organization and publicity and also provides recipe booklets free to shoppers.
The market is open only on Fridays from about 7:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, or earlier if the farmers sell out.
