Finding the Top Picks at New Rochelle's
Farmers Market
by Judy Silberstein
In the first weeks of July, the early Pennsylvania
peaches are ripe and juicy. Later you'll get the luscious
cling-frees - great for eating or baking. To try them,
you'll have to rush over to New Rochelle's Farmers Market
on Fridays, because supplies may be limited warns farmer
David Wengerd from Pennsylvania.
Every Friday during the growing season, the New Rochelle
Farmers Market appears on Memorial Highway next to the
Library Plaza. There is street parking on Huguenot (Route
One) and in nearby lots for shoppers. Many customers
walk over from the surrounding apartments.
Not everything is better or cheaper than what you'll
find at Larchmont's Simply the Best or the other Village
groceries. You have to be selective and spot the "real"
farm produce. Unless there's no alternative, you can
by-pass the hothouse tomatoes and wait for the field-ripened
ones. Early in the season, apples may be from last year
and showing their age or from this year but still sour.
Farmer Wengerd answers all questions and will even let
you sample if you're unsure.
The farmers are sponsored by the New Rochelle Department
of Development, reports Market Manager Sheila Beacher
who helps with organization and publicity and also provides
recipe booklets free to shoppers.
The market is open only on Fridays from about 7:00
in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, or earlier
if the farmers sell out.
