Harbin Perils: Cuisine and Quakes

by Elizabeth Benton

Chinese street food vendors

Chicken hearts, exotic by US take-out standard, are a common treat in China, according to recent tourists.

June 30, 2002

Today I went to my journalist teacher's house for lunch. Her husband is the chef of the family and his food was delicious…

…On Thursday however, I had a more intimidating Chinese family visit. My Chinese family (arranged through the language program) invited me for dinner. When I got there I realized I wasn't accustomed to any of their dishes (chicken hearts!) I didn't know what to do...I was worried that if I tasted it I would make a horrible face...and if I didn't taste it, I would offend them. In the end I stuck to the vegetables, and probably offended them. We'll see how it goes next time (if they ever invite me again).

Another interesting/scary occurrence...Harbin had an earthquake! Nearby Jilin was the main spot I think, 7.2 on the Richter scale.

In Harbin it was mostly just echoes from Jilin. I woke up in the middle of the night, when the earthquake hit, a little confused, since it wasn't very strong. In Larchmont, the floors shake in a similar way when someone uses the washing machine, so I assumed it must have been something like that, and went back to bed.

:) lisby
