Cooking Classes & Holiday Celebrations
at Twinkle Toes: Little Ones Learn About Tradition and
Treats
from Twinkle Toes
(November 6, 2003) Twinkle Toes, the
petite Boston Post Road boutique that carries clothes for
babies
through
teens, is offering
in-store holiday events for children ages 6 and up. Owner
Denise MacDonald has developed an intriguing concept:
cooking classes that provide young ladies and gentlemen
with an appreciation of the customs and history of each
holiday while they create and eat traditional treats.
For Give Thanks to Others, in November, there will be
homemade marshmallows to decorate and sample along with
homemade hot chocolate and applesauce cake. The children
will experience an affair in the style of an afternoon
tea.
For Celebrating Families, Friends and
Traditions, in December,
the goal is to remember what people treasure about the
winter holidays – the food and its role in creating
the warm associations people have with the end-of-year
festivities.
“We’ve done tea parties in the past,” said
MacDonald, who feels that celebrations are an important
part of Twinkle Toes, which features outfits for special
occasions along with more casual clothes. “Holiday
classes seemed more appropriate for the season. Since we’re
celebrating families, friends and traditions at this time,
this is a way for children to be in involved.”
“Denise approached me at the end of the summer with the idea of doing something
involving the holidays, tradition and food,” said Liv Grey, who teaches
cooking classes in Westchester homes. “The holidays are a busy time and
there is a lot of emphasis on the commercial aspect. We wanted to create an
in-store event that would celebrate history and the fun of creating a festive
environment;
food is a great way to do that.”
“
The hardest part was coming up with edible projects we could do in the store
- without having to cook or making a mess,” said Grey, who develops and
teaches holiday menus through her business, Medium Rare.
“
We wanted to bring people together with what they have in common. With Christmas
and Hanukah – it’s about traditions and what makes a celebration, “ said
Grey. She will also discuss the role of etiquette, with the children, though
she is quick to point out that she will not be lecturing. Rather, the class
will be a fun adventure for the children, and a way of kicking off the holidays
with spirit.
